Townhouse and Condo Cleaning in Mount Laurel: What to Focus On

· By

Clean, bright condo living area with an open kitchen

Mount Laurel grew quickly as a commuter town thanks to Route 73, I-295 and the New Jersey Turnpike, and much of that growth came as planned communities. Names like Larchmont, Ramblewood and Rancocas Woods come up often, along with many townhouse and condo developments and 55+ communities.

Townhouses and condos are easier to maintain than a big detached house in some ways, but they have their own cleaning challenges: stairs on every floor, compact kitchens that get used hard, and less space to hide clutter. This guide focuses on what matters most in that kind of home.

Stairs: the most overlooked part of a townhouse

A typical townhouse has two or three floors connected by carpeted or wood stairs. Dust, pet hair and crumbs settle at the back edge of every tread and along the baseboards on each side, and they do not come out with a quick pass of the vacuum.

Use a hand vacuum or a crevice tool on each step every week, and wipe the handrail and balusters, which collect fingerprints. On wood stairs, a slightly damp microfiber cloth with a wood-safe cleaner keeps treads from getting slippery. Every few months, check the carpet on the stairs for wear marks and spot clean any stains before they set.

Compact kitchens that work hard

Condo and townhouse kitchens are often smaller, which means grease, crumbs and splashes concentrate on fewer surfaces. Wipe the stovetop and the backsplash behind it after cooking, clean the microwave weekly and run the range hood fan while you cook to keep grease off the cabinets above.

Small kitchens also tend to have less counter space, so clutter builds fast. Clearing the counters completely once a week, cleaning underneath, and putting back only what you use daily makes the whole room easier to keep clean.

Bathrooms with limited ventilation

Many townhouses and condos have interior bathrooms with no window, so moisture depends entirely on the exhaust fan. In humid New Jersey summers, that is where mildew shows up first. Run the fan during and after every shower, keep the door open afterward when you can, squeegee glass doors and wash the bath mat often.

A weekly bathroom cleaning should cover the toilet inside and out, sink and faucet, mirror, tub or shower, the fan cover (which collects a surprising amount of dust) and the floor.

Shared walls, shared air and dust

Attached homes share walls and sometimes ventilation paths with neighbors. That does not mean they get dirtier, but closed-up units tend to hold onto dust and odors longer. Change HVAC filters on schedule, vacuum vents and returns monthly, and dust ceiling fans and blinds every couple of weeks.

If you have pets, vacuum upholstered furniture and the edges of rooms weekly, where hair collects against the baseboards.

HOA rules and move-in or move-out cleaning

Many Mount Laurel communities have homeowner association rules about trash, exterior appearance and sometimes the condition of units at sale. If you are selling or moving out of a townhouse or condo, a thorough deep cleaning helps with showings and the final walk-through: inside cabinets and closets, inside appliances, baseboards, light fixtures, windows and every floor.

If you are moving in, the same deep cleaning before your furniture arrives is the easiest time to get every corner done.

Balconies, patios and the front entry

Many condos have a small balcony and many townhouses have a patio or deck off the back. They are easy to forget, but whatever collects there (pollen, leaves, dust from nearby roads) gets tracked straight inside. Sweep them every week or two in spring and fall, wipe outdoor furniture before you use it and shake out the doormat.

The front entry deserves the same attention. In a townhouse, the front door often opens right into the living area or onto the stairs, with no foyer to catch dirt. A good mat outside, a washable mat inside and a shoe rack by the door stop most of the grit before it reaches the carpet.

Making the most of a smaller space

In a condo or a smaller townhouse, clutter is the biggest obstacle to a clean home. Counters, dining tables and the top of the dresser become drop zones, and it is hard to clean around piles. A quick ten-minute reset each evening (dishes away, mail sorted, clothes in the hamper) makes the weekly cleaning faster and much more thorough.

Closets and storage areas also fill up fast. Going through one closet or cabinet per month keeps things manageable and makes moving day, whenever it comes, much easier.

A routine for busy commuters

Many Mount Laurel residents commute to Philadelphia, Cherry Hill or along the Turnpike, so weeknights are short. A simple split works well: a professional cleaning every week or two for the full job, and small daily habits (dishes done, counters wiped, shoes at the door) in between. It keeps weekends free.

Garages and laundry closets

Many townhouses have an attached garage that opens straight into the house. Sweep the garage entry area regularly, since grit and leaves from the garage floor ride in on shoes. Stacked laundry closets collect lint behind and on top of the machines, so wipe them down monthly and clean the lint trap housing.

Frequently asked questions

01Is cleaning a townhouse different from cleaning a single-family home?

The tasks are similar, but townhouses have more stairs and usually smaller kitchens and bathrooms with limited ventilation, so those areas need more frequent attention.

02Do you do move-out cleaning for condos in Mount Laurel?

Yes. S&A House Cleaning does deep cleaning for move-ins and move-outs in houses, townhouses, apartments and condos. Call or text (856) 258-0638 to request a quote.

03How often should I clean the stairs?

Vacuum each step weekly with a crevice tool or hand vacuum and wipe the handrail. Stairs collect dust and hair along the back of each tread that a quick pass misses.

04What is the best way to prevent mildew in a windowless bathroom?

Run the exhaust fan during and for 20 to 30 minutes after showers, squeegee glass and tile, and keep the door open afterward when possible. Clean the fan cover regularly so it keeps pulling air.
